- Presentation: Before CSI, Before Forensic Files, There Was Sherlock Holmes…from 6:30 - 8:30 pm in the Lora Hussey Room at the Hussey Mayfield Memorial Public Library in Zionsville. In the late 1800s, forensic science was just coming into its own as a specialized field. DNA had yet to be discovered, fingerprint identification was just becoming accepted, and chemists used beakers, test tubes, and Bunsen burners rather than today’s sophisticated instruments. Sherlock Holmes often used or referred to scientific methods and tests in his investigations, and the Holmes stories were the first fictional detective stories to delve deeply into forensic science. Meet at the Exploratoreum Table for a lively discussion of one of America’s best “solitary-sojourn” nature writers: Henry Beston. His book The Outermost House is a classic in the field! The book is a masterpiece about a time (1920s), a place (Cape Cod) and a man (Henry Beston). A personal response to a year lived on a dune above the sea: a man who has come in solitude to watch, listen and bear witness.
